Police will launch a two-week road-safety campaign tomorrow, targetting public service vehicle and goods vehicle drivers, to remind them of the importance of safe driving.
During the first week, Police officers will distribute Safe Driving Code for Goods Vehicles to boost drivers' awareness of safe loading and speed. They will also hand out Project Safe-Ride leaflets to promote the road-safety vision: "Zero Accidents on the Road, Hong Kong's Goal."
During week two, officers will crack down on drivers committing traffic offences - including speeding, following too close to the vehicle in front, failing to comply with traffic signals, using a hand-held phone while driving, and seatbelt-related offences.
People are encouraged to report bad driving to the Police, or the Transport Advisory Committee's Transport Complaints Unit on 2889 9999. They can also call the 24-hour Police transport hotline 2754 7668 to report minibus drivers' unsafe driving.
A total of 11,562 people were injured in traffic accidents in the first eight months of 2009, an 8.4% decrease when compared with the 12,624 in the same period in 2008. These accidents were mainly the result of inattentive driving, following too close to the vehicle in front, changing lanes carelessly, losing control of vehicles and careless cycling.
