Police will hold a citywide road safety campaign December 16 to January 2 focusing on drink driving. Officers will invite the public to take voluntary breath tests and distribute publicity leaflets appealing to motorists not to drink and drive.
They will remind drivers the Road Traffic Legislation (Amendment) Bill 2008 passed in June, which enforces tougher penalties on drink driving, will take effect early next year. Police will also enhance enforcement action during the period.
There were 11,963 traffic accidents in the first 10 months of this year, down 750 cases on the same period last year. Sixty-five involved drink driving, down 24 cases on the same period last year.
