8 fined for crab rip-offs
*
Customs & Excise Department

Kowloon City Magistracy has fined seven seafood stall owners $680 to $3,000 for supplying crabs of short weight.

Customs officers posed as customers and purchased crabs at various marketplaces in Wan Chai, Sha Tin, Kowloon City, Hung Hum and Wong Tai Sin between December and May.

The officers then checked the purchased items with electronic balances. The crabs, which were tied with excessive weeds, were short of the purported weight.

According to the Government Laboratory's examination results, the crabs' net weight was less than the purported weight. The differences ranged from 8.38% to 62.8%.
