48 ill in 2 gastroenteritis outbreaks

*
Centre for Health Protection

The Centre for Health Protection has confirmed two gastroenteritis outbreaks involving 48 elderly home residents and staff in Tsuen Wan and Ngau Tau Kok. Six have been hospitalised and are in stable condition.

The Tsuen Wan outbreak affected 33 residents and three staff aged 61 to 100 who developed diarrhoea, vomiting and fever between August 20 and September 2. Preliminary laboratory results have tested positive for norovirus, a common cause of viral gastroenteritis.

The Ngau Tau Kok outbreak involved 12 residents aged 67 to 94 who developed diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea and abdominal pain between August 29 and September 3.

The centre has inspected the homes and ordered they follow preventive measures conduct proper disinfection. Staff have been reminded to watch for symptoms and report any suspected cases.

Viral gastroenteritis caused by the norovirus is usually not contagious. Symptoms can last for up to 48 hours. While the disease is more common in cooler months, people should maintain good personal, food and environmental hygiene.
