Shenzhen River monitored for contamination

*

No major adverse contamination has been detected on the Hong Kong side of the Shenzhen River after the accidental discharge of pollutants from a Guangdong landfill into the Puji River.

The Puji flows into the Shenzhen waterway, but Secretary for the Environment Edward Yau said today said no contamination has been found.

He said the Government has launched an inter-departmental team to do site investigations and sampling to monitor water quality at 10 surveillance stations.

"So far we have not noticed any major adverse contamination on Hong Kong side. But we will keep watching the situation and extend the surveillance in the coming days to see if there is any adverse effect on our side."
