12,067 university students join English test
*

A record high of 12,067 final year students of University Grants Committee-funded undergraduate degree programmes have registered for the International English Language Testing System, up 2.3% on last year.

The test is under the eighth round of the Common English Proficiency Assessment Scheme, or CEPAS. More than 99% of students registered online.

University Grants Committee Secretary-General Michael Stone said given CEPAS' voluntary nature, the encouraging participation rate shows students attach great importance to their English proficiency.

The number of CEPAS participants has risen steadily in the last few rounds, from around 7,300 final- year students in 2002-03 to almost 11,800 in the 2008-09 round.
