Lead found in kindergarten

September 21, 2015

One of the three water samples collected from Yan Chai Hospital Kwok Chi Leung Kindergarten has exceeded the World Health Organisation lead limit.

The Education Bureau today announced the water test results of another batch of kindergartens.

The tainted sample comes from the tap of a boiler in the school kitchen and was found to contain lead content of 13 micrograms per litre, which exceeded the WHO standard of 10 micrograms per litre.

The water in the boiler was used for drinking by both staff and students. The Department of Health will arrange blood tests for the 122 students.

The Government is testing the lead level of water samples from kindergartens as well as public and direct subsidy scheme schools built with government funding in 2005 or after.

It has completed checks in 94 kindergartens so far, with 92 passing the tests.
