Lead found in kindergarten

September 17, 2015

One of the three water samples collected from Hong Kong Christian Service Kwun Tong Nursery School has exceeded the World Health Organisation lead limit.

Secretary for Education Eddie Ng told reporters today that the tainted sample comes from a newly-installed electric water boiler in the school and was found to contain lead levels 10 times above the WHO standard.

He noted the boiler water is for disinfection, not drinking, adding the school has stopped using the boiler.

He said the Department of Health has also been informed of the test result and will look into the case.

The Government is now testing the lead level of water samples from kindergartens as well as public and direct subsidy scheme schools built with government funding in 2005 or after.

It has completed tests in 38 kindergartens so far, with 37 passing the test.
