Seven police officers were suspended today for their alleged involvement in the assault of a protester on Wednesday.
Police Public Relations Branch Senior Superintendent Kong Man-keung told a press conference that the force is investigating the incident as a criminal matter and will report regularly on its progress. The suspended officers are from different stations in Kowloon.
He stressed that the Police will not tolerate illegal acts and will treat with impartiality, anyone who is subjected to excessive force during actions to disperse a crowd.
On the issue of "flash mob" protesters suddenly blocking Lung Wo Road last night, Police condemned those who sent out a call on the Internet for people to illegally occupy streets.
He added that Mong Kok remains a high-risk conflict area and officers will continue to remove road barriers in the district. Protesters have been urged not to obstruct the exercise.
