Senior officials have been monitoring the development of protests in different districts, and have taken action to minimise disruptions.
Chief Secretary Carrie Lam made the statement to reporters today, saying the Government has cancelled the annual National Day fireworks display, suspended schools in affected areas, and will keep people updated about traffic conditions and public transport arrangements.
Speaking on the Police’s work, she said riot officers were withdrawn this morning as protesters in Admiralty settled down. She urged protesters to remain peaceful, rational and calm.
She said she understands some people feel uneasy after Police fired tear gas towards protesters yesterday, adding the force will make a professional judgement when enforcing the law to protect public safety and order.
She urged protesters to stop occupying main roads so they can be reopened to emergency and public vehicles.
She also refuted rumours that she will resign, saying they have no basis.
