Chief Secretary Carrie Lam says the second phase consultation on constitutional reform will be conducted later, at a better time.
She told the media today that yesterday's events showed now is not the best opportunity to take forward the reform, although it remains the Government’s most important objective to achieve universal suffrage in selecting the Chief Executive in 2017.
However, Mrs Lam said it is unrealistic to expect the National People’s Congress Standing Committee decision on reform to be reversed.
The next step is to find a solution that adheres to the decision which at the same time embraces public views on electing the Chief Executive, she said.
