Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man says the Centre for Food Safety is preparing for the recall and destruction of substandard lard products in Hong Kong.
He told reporters today the Government will work closely with the food industry to prevent substandard oil being used for human consumption, and will consider setting up a scheme to regulate the recycling of used oil.
He said the incident involving the export of lard for animal feed as edible lard has damaged Hong Kong’s reputation and a criminal act is believed to be involved.
The Centre for Food Safety and Police are investigating the case and several people have been arrested for fraud, he added.
