The Food & Environmental Hygiene Department licences and monitors Hong Kong’s cooking oil producers.
Director of Food & Environmental Hygiene Vivian Lau told the media today the manufacturers must obtain a licence from the department, which then checks their hygiene standards.
She said nine local producers hold a licence to make cooking oil, but none produce cooking lard.
Three companies hold the Offensive Trade Licence required to produce lard, but these licences do not allow them to produce cooking lard.
She said action will be taken against the illegal production of cooking oil, and the department will boost monitoring to protect public health and maintain consumer confidence.
The department tested 450 cooking oil samples in 2013. All passed the safety check.
