Chief Executive CY Leung today called on legislators seize the opportunity for direct talks with Central Government officials on Hong Kong's political reform at a meeting scheduled for May 31 in Shenzhen.
Speaking to reporters ahead of an Executive Council meeting this morning, Mr Leung noted the city's constitutional development has reached a critical juncture, and that the Government's reform package will soon be voted on in the Legislative Council.
Some pan-democratic lawmakers have said they will not join Sunday's meeting because it coincides with a rally to commemorate June 4, but Mr Leung urged them to consider their responsibilities and decide which event was more important.
The Chief Executive added that there were still several issues worth discussing with Beijing officials, even if some legislators had already decided to veto the reform proposal.
