Tougher drink driving bill to be tabled
*

A bill providing statutory provisions for introducing measures to further combat drink driving and other bad motoring will be gazetted April 30 and tabled at the Legislative Council May 12.

The Road Traffic (Amendment) Bill 2010 proposes to amend the existing ordinance by introducing a three-tier penalty system with a sliding scale, and making a high alcohol level a circumstance of aggravation in all dangerous-driving offences.

The bill also proposes the introduction of a new offence of "causing grievous bodily harm by dangerous driving".

To enhance the deterrent effect it also proposes introducing a provision requiring the court to order the disqualification period to start at the conclusion of the jail sentence, unless the court sees fit both imprisonment and disqualification terms should be implemented concurrently, in the circumstance the driver is convicted of a subsequent serious traffic offence.
