Police arrested four drivers for drink-driving offences during a citywide crackdown from April 23 to April 26. During the blitz, 1,048 drivers took breath tests.
Since the Road Traffic Legislation (Amendment) Ordinance 2008 came into effect on February 9 last year, 58,393 drivers have been breath-tested. Police arrested 325 people for having proportions of alcohol exceeding the prescribed limit or refusing to be tested.
Those found guilty of drink-driving are liable to a fine of up to $25,000, three years in jail and 10 driving-offence points.
The new legislation also raises the penalties on drink-driving offences by disqualifying the offenders from driving for at least three months on first conviction, and at least two years on second conviction. Offenders must attend a driving- improvement course before they get their driving licenses back. They may not be insured when convicted of drink-driving offences.
