Woman jailed for hiring illegal maid
*
Immigration Department

A 42-year-old woman has been jailed 10 months by Sha Tin Magistracy for hiring a Mainland illegal immigrant as a domestic helper.

The sentence was meted out October 2.

On April 23 Police found the maid at the defendant's home and arrested the two women.

The defendant denied knowledge of the maid's status but was charged for aiding and abetting an illegal immigrant to remain in Hong Kong, and for employing a person not lawfully employable.

The maid confessed she entered Hong Kong illegally in September last year and was invited by a middleman to work for the defendant for $2,000 a month. She was convicted for illegally staying in Hong Kong and jailed 15 months in April.
