Torch relay route under constant review: CS

Henry Tang meets Wang Wei

Eternal flame: Chief Secretary Henry Tang calls on the Beijing Organising Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad Executive Vice-President and Secretary-General Wang Wei in Beijing.

The route for Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay in Hong Kong is under constant review to ensure the Olympic flame passes through the city in a smooth, orderly and safe manner, Chief Secretary Henry Tang says.

He met with officials from the Hong Kong & Macau Affairs Office, the Beijing Organising Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad and the General Administration of Sports in the capital today.

He told reporters the Hong Kong relay leg will be May 2, as scheduled. The Government will review the route according to latest developments and the actual situation to ensure the event is a success.

Noting the Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay in Hong Kong is a once-in-a-lifetime event for many people, Mr Tang said he does not want to change the route drastically.

He said the terrorist threat assessment for Hong Kong is moderate, adding Police will mobilise 3,000 officers for the relay.
