$32m in illicit cigarettes seized
*
Customs & Excise Department

Customs have seized from a Mainland river trade vessel 21.5 million illicit cigarettes, worth $32 million and with duty potential of $17 million, the largest seizure of cross-boundary smuggled cigarettes this year.

Customs officers yesterday found the cigarettes in two containers bound for Malaysia, declared to be carrying asbestos sheets. The vessel arrived from Huangpu Port, Guangzhou.

Initial investigations revealed a syndicate attempted to smuggle the cigarettes to Malaysia through Hong Kong and profit from selling the haul in Southeast Asia.
