Hotel officer convicted of bribery

*
ICAC

Former Langham Hotel purchasing officer Wong Wah-lock has pleaded guilty at the District Court to two counts of accepting bribes the form of "tea money" from a frozen meat supplier for placing purchase orders.

Judge Yau Chi-lap adjourned the case until June 8 for mention, and granted the defendant $5,000 cash bail.

The court heard that Wong, aged 46, joined Langham in 1990 as a purchasing officer for procuring food and beverages from suppliers. Since late 2001, Wong had accepted "tea money", about $1,000 every several months, from a frozen meat supplier as a reward for placing more orders with his company.

Wong also attended monthly mahjong gatherings the supplier organised, during which the supplier gave bribe payments to all participants, including Wong.

On December 6, 2005, the ICAC arrested Wong, the supplier and two other people during a mahjong gathering, seizing $3,700 from the defendant.

When interviewed under caution, Wong admitted that the sum was "tea money" from the supplier.

Apart from Wong, 13 others have been charged with bribery and related offences in connection with the investigation. One is awaiting trial in August, one awaiting verdict and one was acquitted after trial. Ten have been convicted, with five jailed for three to 18 months and the other five pending sentence.
