3rd mobile illicit cigarette centre closed
*
Customs & Excise Department

Customs officers have shut down a mobile illicit cigarette distribution centre in a Kwai Chung industrial building car park.

Yesterday's raid saw 1.496 million cigarettes, worth $2.1 million and with duty potential of $1.2 million, seized. Most were counterfeit. It was the third case of "speedy distribution" of illicit cigarettes cracked in a week.

Officers arrested three men, aged 29 to 47. They will be charged under Trade Descriptions Ordinance and will appear in Tsuen Wan Magistracy tomorrow.

It has been found that half the illicit cigarettes seized by Customs are counterfeit, and that black market sales are on the rise.
