Chief Executive Donald Tsang says no time and effort will be spared in arresting the culprits who attacked lawmaker Albert Ho, while Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee has strongly condemned the violent attack.

Mr Ho was allegedly attacked by several men in a fast-food shop in Central yesterday. He was admitted to Queen Mary Hospital in stable condition.

Mr Tsang told reporters today that, like other Hong Kong people, he is very angry with the violent act. Noting the act indicated either the culprits' ignorance of Hong Kong people's sentiment or a confrontation to the city's constitution and law, Mr Tsang stressed all efforts will be made to arrest the offenders and bring them before the courts.

Police have set up three hotlines - 2860 7885, 2860 7886 and 2860 7848 - for people who witnessed the attack to offer information.

Hong Kong Island's Regional Crime Unit has taken over the case. It says three or four wanted men, all aged between 20 and 30 and 1.7-1.8 metres in height, were wearing caps at the time they attacked Mr Ho.  

Its investigation will take into account Mr Ho's political activities, his involvement in the Democratic Party's service, his legal work and personal affairs.

Mr Ho is the lawmaker representing the New Territories West geographical constituency, a Tuen Mun District Council member, and a practising solicitor and notary public.

The Secretary for Security reiterated Hong Kong is an open, diversified and free society which relies on law and order. Any disputes should be solved in a peaceful manner and the Government will not tolerate such violent acts.
