Man netted for intimidating Japanese officials
*
Hong Kong Police

The Police Organised Crime & Triad Bureau has arrested a 24-year-old man in the New Territories for sending threatening letters to senior Japanese government officials.

The suspect, a Hong Kong resident, was arrested on July 12 and has been released on bail. Investigation so far does not indicate that he is connected to any political organisation.

Police in Japan received reports that Foreign Minister Taro Aso and Chief Cabinet Minister Shinzo Abe received threatening letters packed with the blade of a paper cutter on June 9 and July 7. It was established that the letters were mailed from Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Police confirmed today the Japanese Consulate in Hong Kong received a similar threatening letter on July 12. Apart from the Japanese Consulate in Hong Kong, it is believed the suspect also sent similar letters to government departments in Japan.

Hong Kong Police are liaising with the police in Japan to collect evidence regarding these cases and enquiries are proceeding.
