District Councillor charged with fraud

ICAC

Tai Po District Councillor Wong Tin-lung has been charged by the Independent Commission Against Corruption for fraud.

The 32-year-old has been released on bail and will appear at Fanling Magistracy on July 17.

Wong allegedly swindled the Tai Po District Council Secretariat into paying him operating expenses higher than he was entitled to on February 15 last year.

He claimed that the assistant he employed was not his relative, in an Operating Expenses Allowance Claim Form. But the assistant was his fiancee.

According to the guidelines issued by the Home Affairs Department, District Council members cannot claim reimbursement for the employment of relatives, including fiancees, as assistants.
