Police are considering forming a special task force to address domestic violence and improve communication between Government departments when handling these cases, Commissioner of Police Dick Lee says.
Speaking on two radio programmes today, Mr Lee said domestic violence is a complicated issue that must be handled with care.
Police have enhanced training on this aspect and have told frontline officers to handle these cases with care. It is important that every officer has a caring attitude and treats every case seriously.
Other concerns
Meanwhile, Mr Lee said Police received over 20,000 debt-collection reports last year, with about 11% involving criminal elements.
Noting there are now no special laws governing debt-collection, he said the force and the Security Bureau are considering new ways to deal with debt collection, such as regulating it.
Also, Mr Lee said technology has made the production of fake banknotes easier. However, the number of fake notes sized in recent years has dropped while the number of people arrested was on the rise.
On manpower, Mr Lee said Police can recruit over 1,200 staff in 2006-07. He hopes the exercise will relieve officers' heavy workload.
