Police chief vows to apprehend child attackers
*
Hong Kong Police

Commissioner of Police Dick Lee says Police attach great importance to the attack on a seven-year-old boy in Kwai Chung, adding Police will do their best to apprehend the culprits as quickly as possible.

Speaking on a radio talk show this morning, Mr Lee urged people who witnessed the case or have information to contact Police.

Noting the crime is an isolated case, he stressed there is no evidence suggesting that Hong Kong's law and order is deteriorating.

Mechanism ensures no abuse

On the covert surveillance order, the commissioner said covert surveillance is one of the effective ways to combat crime, adding a proper mechanism has been set in place to ensure there is no abuse of covert surveillance operations.

He reiterated the Security Bureau will submit a proposal to the Legislative Council soon. He invited the public to give their suggestions on the issue.

Police prepared for WTO MC6

Turning to the Sixth World Trade Organisation Ministerial Conference, Mr Lee said Police will be able to maintain law and order during the conference period, adding there is no need to ask for help from People's Liberation Army forces in Hong Kong.

Mr Lee revealed that he will retire in 2007, adding he has no pre-retirement working plan and no private companies have approached him in this regard so far.
