Police well-prepared for WTO meeting

*
Hong Kong Police

The police are well-prepared and have sufficient manpower to handle the security of the Sixth World Trade Organisation Ministerial Conference to be held in Hong Kong in December, the Commissioner of Police Dick Lee says.

Speaking on a radio talk show today, Mr Lee said police were still liaising with the non-government organisations that planned to stage petitions during the ministerial meeting about details of their activities.

Police would talk with the shops and residents affected before deciding the final route for petitioners and designated petition areas, he added.

While stressing that police would cooperate with all peaceful petitioners, he said no violence would be tolerated.

Mr Lee said, Hong Kong, as an international city, risked being the target of terrorist attack, but added that the present risk assessment was medium-low.

He said, police were still investigating an alleged extortion and blackmail case involving several property developers.

He stressed that it was a serious offence and police were treating the matter as a priority.
