Road deaths fall 19.5%
*

Hong Kong saw 124 road deaths in the first nine months of the year, down 19.5% on the corresponding period last year.

Jaywalking caused most pedestrian accidents while tailgating, speeding, careless lane changing and driving negligently caused most accidents involving drivers.

Speaking at the launch of a new safety scheme today, Road Safety Campaign Committee Chairman Lawrence Yu said everyone has the responsibility of keeping roads safe.

Noting Hong Kong enjoys a good safety record compared with other cities, Mr Yu said it is essential that everyone strives to achieve zero-accident status.

Each incident of death costs the Government $1.9 million to follow up, and causes serious and permanent damage to the family and friends of those killed.

The car is a great invention and capable of improving our quality of life. But when misused, it becomes a lethal weapon, Mr Yu said.

This year's publicity theme is Smart Driving, which aims to remind all road users including pedestrians, cyclists and passengers, to exercise care and show concern for other users.

The campaign will last two months and feature publicity activities, including the display of banners and posters on public transport. The message is "Stay alert, be courteous and obey the law".
