$4.6m in smuggled cigarettes seized
*

Customs officers this morning seized $4.65 million worth of smuggled cigarettes from an incoming lorry at Man Kam To Control Point.

At about 11am, Customs officers stopped and searched an incoming lorry declared to be carrying glass products. They found about 3.1 million smuggled cigarettes of various brands which carried a duty potential of about $2.5 million.

A 36-year-old male driver was arrested and will be charged with importing unmanifested cargo.

Anyone found guilty of the offence is liable to a maximum penalty of a $2 million fine and seven years' imprisonment. The vehicle involved is also liable to forfeiture.
