Man jailed for voting offence
*
ICAC

An elector has been jailed for a month at Eastern Magistracy for a voting offence.

Lai Wai-fung, 58, admitted engaging in corrupt conduct in the 2003 Village Representative Elections. He was campaigning in the Sok Kwu Wan, Lamma Island, constituency.

The court heard that Lai once lived in Sok Kwu Wan, but moved in 1980. On March 9, he submitted a voter registration application for Sok Kwu Wan, but he falsely declared that his principal residence was there. He also claimed he had been a resident for the three years immediately before filing his application.

Meanwhile, another registered elector, Lai Yau-fat, 39, who was charged with a similar voting offence in relation to the same election, was today found guilty at Eastern Magistracy in a separate case.

The case was adjourned until December 17 for sentence, pending a background report. The defendant was remanded in custody.
