Construction manpower under review
*

Secretary for Development Carrie Lam says the Government will fully evaluate construction industry manpower planning and training, and note market need to tie in with the implementation of the 10 major infrastructures.

Speaking at the Construction Industry Training Authority Graduation Ceremony today Mrs Lam said the Government will press ahead with 10 major infrastructural projects in the coming five years, and will launch other major works.

To tie in with Government policies and industry need, apart from organising environmental protection and industrial safety related courses, the authority will launch an introductory course on conservation of built heritage this month.

"We hope more training courses related to historic building conservation can be organised to support the Government's implementation of various heritage conservation works," she said.

Registration system

To enhance the quality of construction workers, unregistered workers have been prohibited from working on sites from September 1.

The successful implementation of the construction worker registration system can help solve wage disputes and combat illegal workers, she added.

Mrs Lam said the Construction Industry Council and the authority will be amalgamated early next year to tie in with the future development of the whole construction industry.

"Through the continuous efforts of the Government, CIC and all construction industry employees, I hope the Hong Kong construction industry will continue to improve and contribute to the sustainable development of Hong Kong," she said.
