The construction and upgrading works of the 2009 East Asia Games venues will be completed on schedule by mid-next year, Director of Leisure & Cultural Services Thomas Chow says.
The Government has invested substantial resources into building a new sports ground in Tseung Kwan O and upgrading existing sports venues to meet the required international standards for holding the event and for Hong Kong's long-term sports development.
District Council chairmen and vice-chairmen backed the games at a meeting today pledging they will co-operate and participate actively in the event.
The games will be held at 21 public and private venues spread over 10 districts in Hong Kong. Thirteen existing government venues are undergoing improvement works, including upgrading ventilation and lighting systems, seats and facilities for the disabled.
A volunteer recruitment scheme has also been started. Volunteers will help in the preparation and reception, hospitality, security, media, administration and logistics areas during the games.
A souvenir shop is located at the Hong Kong Park Sports Centre, which also runs as a social entrepreneurship model to provide vocational training and job opportunities for underprivileged groups.
The games will be held December 5 to 13 with nine countries and regions competing for more than 280 gold medals in 1,700 events of 23 sports items. Click here for details.
