Elderly man treated for myiasis
*
Centre for Health Protection

The Centre for Health Protection has confirmed a human myiasis case involving an 81-year-old man living in a North District elderly home.

He had bleeding gums on December 22 and went to North District Hospital for treatment. Maggots were found in his mouth. He is now in stable condition.

It is the 14th case of human myiasis this year. Fifteen were reported in 2006, six in 2005, eight in 2004 and nine in 2003.

The centre urged people to observe good personal and environmental hygiene and treat all wounds immediately.
