2 more canned pork products found unsafe

The Centre for Food Safety has found another two canned pork products tainted with chemicals. The products' sole agent has recalled the affected products and suspended their sale.

The centre's Assistant Director Dr Miranda Lee told reporters today among the 19 canned pork products tested so far, three failed.

Unsafe food: The Centre of Food Safety has found MaLing pork luncheon meat and stewed pork rib tainted with chemicals.

Apart from the unsatisfactory Shanghai MaLing pork luncheon meat announced Monday, another MaLing sample was found to contain traces of malachite green and a MaLing stewed pork rib had traces of nitrofurans metabolite. Both products were made in Beijing.

Based on the very low level of chemicals detected, Dr Lee said normal consumption should not pose any serious health risks to consumers. The centre will step up inspection and inform the relevant Mainland authorities for follow-up action.

On recent reports that some Pringles potato chips were found to contain potassium bromate, Dr Lee said tests on the 14 samples collected in the local market show the products are chemical-free.
