First half draws 4,477 mosquito complaints
*
Food & Environmental Hygiene Department

The Food & Environmental Hygiene Department received 4,477 mosquito complaints in the first six months of this year, the department's Pest Control Officer-in-Charge Yuen Ming-chi says.

Eighty prosecutions were made from January to July for detection of mosquito-breeding places. Half of these were found in construction sites and the rest in residential estates and private properties.

Speaking on two radio talk shows this morning, Mr Yuen said due to hot and rainy weather, ovitrap indices are usually high during the period from June to September. He called on the public to stay alert to the mosquito problem and adopt appropriate measures.

He said ovitraps have been evenly placed in different districts to collect data to compare the mosquito problem. The department will use the data to review the effectiveness of the concerned district's anti-mosquito measures.

Mr Suen said the department attaches great importance to the issue of ovitrap sabotage, adding the department will not use data collected by the ovitraps that have been tampered with. If necessary, it will refer the matter to Police for investigation.
