Private doctors to help treat drug abuse

*

The Action Committee Against Narcotics will work with private doctors and non-government organisations to provide body check-ups for young drug abusers to motivate them to seek help, Commissioner for Narcotics Sally Wong says. The scheme is expected to launch by year's-end or early next year.

Speaking on a radio talk show today, Ms Wong said the Security Bureau's Narcotics Division has jointly organised seminars for teachers with the Education & Manpower Bureau, and produced television programmes to equip parents and teachers with the skills to handle drug-related problems.

As young people abuse drugs mainly because of peer influences, curiosity and boredom, the division will organise activities like a hip-hop dance competition and mobile phone game to promote anti-drug messages, Ms Wong said.

As the number of young ketamine abusers is rising in Hong Kong, the division is therefore also stepping up anti-drug measures through legislation, law enforcement and co-operating with other organisations, she said.

Education & Manpower Bureau Chief Curriculum Development Officer Cheung Wing-hung said along with educating parents on drug abuse, it is also important to strengthen support from schools and society to help youngsters understand the dangers of abuse, the way to refuse drugs and build positive values in life.
