The Centre for Health Protection has confirmed nine institutional norovirus outbreaks affecting 102 people in the past two weeks. Most occurred in elderly homes.

Winter is the peak season for viral gastroenteritis caused by norovirus, the centre said, adding that keeping good personal, food and environmental hygiene is important to prevent infection. It also reminds elderly home staff to watch for symptoms and report any suspected outbreak.

Meanwhile, Queen Elizabeth Hospital today confirmed that one more male patient, aged 76, has come down with diarrhoea - a symptom of norovirus. He is being treated in isolation and is stable.

Since December 1, five patients and one staff member from the same ward have come down with norovirus. Admission to the ward has been suspended, but visiting arrangements remain normal. Infection control measures have been stepped up and patients are under close surveillance.
