Man ill with meningococcal infection
*
CHP logo (Eng version)

The Centre for Health Protection has today confirmed a local case of meningococcal infection, involving a 47-year-old man, bringing this year's total to six.

The Sham Shui Po man developed fever, chills, cough and shortness of breath on December 16 and was admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital on December 17. He is now in stable condition. He has no travel history within the incubation period. Contact tracing is being conducted by the centre.

The infection is caused by the meningococcus bacterium, and is transmitted by direct contact, including coughing and sneezing, with infected people. Incubation varies from two to 10 days, and is commonly three to four days.

Preventive measures

To prevent meningococcal infections:

* wash hands frequently, and observe good personal and environmental hygiene;

* avoid crowded places;

* avoid close contact with people with fever or severe headaches; and,

* cover nose and mouth while sneezing or coughing.

Travellers returning from endemic areas should consult their doctor promptly if they feel unwell.

People can visit the centre's website for general information about the disease, or visit the Travellers' Health Service website.
