$1b set for long-term sports facilities
*

More than $1 billion will be invested to build a world-standard sports ground and upgrade existing facilities for the fifth East Asian Games in 2009, Secretary for Home Affairs Dr Patrick Ho says.

Speaking before attending Hong Kong Night in Macau today, Dr Patrick Ho said the Legislative Council has approved $300 million to build Tseung Kwan O Sports Ground to hold track and field events.

More than 10 indoor and outdoor sports venues will see $700 million in upgrades. Detailed plans and estimates will be submitted to LegCo soon for funding approval.

Although operation costs of $170 million have been approved, Dr Ho said the Government is reviewing the budget and making adjustments in accordance with the games' projected incomes and expenditures. It will consult LegCo by year's-end.
