Hong Kong has entered the summer influenza season, with 193 cases recorded from July 4 to 10, the highest in the previous three months.
Centre for Health Protection Community Medicine Consultant Dr Thomas Tsang said apart from the primary peak season between January and March, influenza also tends to be more active in Hong Kong during summer, especially July and August.
Epidemiological data captured by the centre's influenza surveillance programme during the week showed the consultation rate for influenza-like-illness rose in Government outpatient clinics.
Ten confirmed flu outbreaks affecting eight elderly and two mental homes were reported during the week.
Dr Tsang called on people to guard against influenza and other respiratory illnesses by:
* building good body immunity through a proper diet, regular exercise and adequate rest, reducing stress and avoiding smoking;
* maintaining good personal hygiene, and washing hands after sneezing, coughing or cleaning the nose;
* maintaining good ventilation; and,
* avoiding crowded places with poor ventilation.
The young, elderly and people with chronic diseases should consult a doctor promptly if they develop flu-like symptoms.
