HK, Mainland to enhance food safety
*

Hong Kong and the Mainland have agreed to strengthen their already well-established food safety notification mechanism.

This was the message from Permanent Secretary for Health, Welfare & Food Carrie Yau after meeting officials from the Ministries of Agriculture and Commerce, and the State General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection & Quarantine today.

They discussed a number of issues including improvements to food safety, importation of live poultry, and avian influenza updates.

Both sides are very concerned about recent cases of illegal food processing in media reports that caused alarm among consumers about the quality and safety of pre-packed food products.

Enhanced exchange to hinder illegal workshops

Mrs Yau said both sides agreed that enhanced information flow between the retail end and controlling authorities will help crack down on illegal Mainland food workshops.

"At the same time, we have discussed ways to step up public education on food safety to promote and enhance awareness of the consumers and food traders," she said.

"With better co-operation and speedy exchange of information, we hope we can tackle the problem at the source to enhance consumer protection."

On the recent outbreak of avian influenza in Anhui, Mrs Yau said relevant authorities have updated the delegation on the latest control and monitoring work, their risk assessment and the preventive measures being taken.

Those accompanying Mrs Yau on the visit included the Director of Food & Environmental Hygiene Gregory Leung, Deputy Secretary for Health, Welfare & Food Eddy Chan, and Deputy Director of Food & Environmental Hygiene Dr Mak Sin-ping.
