Chinese University has been commissioned to conduct projects under the Research Fund for the Control of Infectious Diseases.
Its $25 million grant will support a portfolio of research spanning five years that is expected to produce results from a minimum of 30 research projects.
Speaking at the contract signing ceremony for the commissioned projects today, Secretary for Health, Welfare & Food Dr Yeoh Eng-kiong said the university is internationally recognised for its leadership in synthesising knowledge during the initial phase of the SARS outbreak and its outstanding research in hepatitis and related diseases.
Dr Yeoh said the funds will further consolidate their initiatives through a focused programme involving clinical trails and public health research on emerging infectious diseases.
Major illnesses studied
The university will conduct a number of research projects on SARS, AIDS, tuberculosis, gastroenteritis and hepatitis.
Research will focus on two key areas - epidemiological studies on features of infectious diseases, and the impact of infectious diseases on stigmatisation, mental health, social support, risk perception and responses, use of health services and behavioural changes.
This is the second batch of research projects commissioned by the bureau under the fund. It earlier commissioned a portfolio of research projects to HK University for a total of $22 million and granted $8 million to facilitate its construction of a biosafety-level-three laboratory.
The $500 million fund was set up last July. It has so far committed $135 million for various research studies in Hong Kong and the Mainland.
