Suspected SARS case tests negative

*

Hong Kong still has a good chance of being taken off the WHO's list of SARS-infected places on Monday after tests on the last suspected case gave negative results.

Secretary for Health, Welfare & Food Dr Yeoh Eng-kiong said today that further tests did not find any coronavirus, so the patient has been removed from the suspected case list.

As long as we have no new cases in the next two days, Hong Kong will be taken off the WHO's list.

Dr Yeoh said he felt sorry that so many people were infected by SARS which had killed more than two hundred people.

He said the virus could come back anytime so the most important job now is to remain vigilant.

As a short term measure, the Government will seek funds from the Legislative Council to build an additional 1,000 rooms to treat infectious disease patients.

In the longer term, the Government plans to build three or four infectious disease wards in public hospitals.
