About 100 million trees, shrubs and flowers have been planted across Hong Kong in the past decade reflecting the importance the Government's attaches to greening, Permanent Secretary for Development Mak Chai-kwong says.

Officiating at the opening of the 10th Anniversary Memorial Garden and Community Tree Planting Day in Kowloon Park today, Mr Mak said greening measures in the New Territories will be enhanced.

"To create a high quality and sustainable living environment, we have to fully consider the concept and principle of urban design and town planning when implementing works projects," he said.

"We will assess from different angles the impact of the projects on the environment, economy and social culture, and focus on the basic design elements that would help reflect the fine tradition of Hong Kong."

The Development Bureau will improve the co-ordination, planning and implementation efficiency of works projects and expedite the implementation of infrastructural development and capital works programme to bolster the development of Hong Kong's economy.

The memorial garden marks the 10th anniversary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. It features 50 bauhinia variegata trees.
