There were 39 convictions for polluters in September, the Environmental Protection Department says. Twenty-three were for air pollution, nine for noise, four for improper waste disposal and three for water pollution.

The heaviest fine was $80,000, for a company that imported controlled waste without a permit.

A man who exported controlled waste without a permit was sentenced to two months jail suspended for 18 months.
