Regional film co-operation urged
*

Film Development Council chairman Jack So pledges to work with the Mainland, Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan to pool resources to develop the region's film industry.

He said the market for Chinese-language films can be expanded by co-operation in areas such as financing, production and distribution.

To promote Hong Kong film directors of the new generation and explore opportunities for co-operation on film productions and investment, he led a delegation of 20 members on a visit to Singapore and Malaysia last week. The trip was part of the Hong Kong Film: New Action project.

"Singapore and Malaysia have a Chinese population of over 9 million. The region is an important market for us," he said.

In Kuala Lumpur, the delegation attended the opening ceremony of the film festival held by the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office in Singapore. The eight Hong Kong films screened are directed by a new generation of directors.

The council will hold business forums and promotional sessions to promote the project during the Hong Kong International Film & TV Market in March.
