The WTO 6th Ministerial Conference in Hong Kong will go ahead as scheduled Secretary for Commerce, Industry & Technology John Tsang says, rejecting speculation it will be called off. The Government actively continues to organise the event.
Noting the WTO's mechanism is a consensus system, Mr Tsang said holding and postponing a meeting requires the agreement of 148 members.
"There is quite a bit of discussion in Europe right now among the members, particularly on progress in the agriculture area. Hopefully we are expecting to see a substantive offer coming from the European Union on Thursday in response to the ambitious offer put on the table by the US a couple of weeks ago," he said.
"With that, we can have some kind of informal arrangements, we can seek to multi-lateralise that and open up the opportunities for other issues to be discussed so we could try to bring that to a more specific level of understanding by the time they come to Hong Kong."
