HK to reap benefits from WTO conference

*

The Sixth World Trade Organisation Ministerial Conference in December will bring Hong Kong about $100 million in tourist receipts and showcase the city's strengths in the international arena, Director-General of Trade & Industry Raymond Young says.

He added arrangements will be made to cater for non-governmental organisations' needs.

An area will be set up for about 2,000 accredited NGO representatives inside the conference venue to facilitate their lobbying activities. Direct dialogues are also being conducted with local and overseas NGOs to better understand their concerns.

Speaking on a radio talk show today, Mr Young noted Hong Kong has been facing fierce competition and needs to participate in more international events to boost its image.

He believed the Sixth WTO Ministerial Conference, with an attendance of about 15,000 people from all over the globe, will contribute about $100 million in tourist receipts and showcase Hong Kong as Asia's world city.

Special security arrangements aim to protect NGOs

A sum of $250 million has been set aside for holding the conference, mainly for hiring venues and staffing.

On security , Mr Young stressed special arrangements will be made to cater for the needs of NGOs. Briefings on the latest events will also be held for NGOs during the conference to keep them informed.

Mr Young said an open attitude will be adopted to handle protests, adding all protesters and NGO representatives will be treated equally.

He reiterated the Government will not reject those accredited by WTO from entering Hong Kong.
