CE expresses quake condolences
*

Chief Executive Donald Tsang has extended his condolences to the victims of the Indonesian earthquake and their families.

In a telephone conversation with the Indonesian President Dr Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono this morning, Mr Tsang said Hong Kong's aid agencies are ready to help. The Director of Administration will co-ordinate the Government's relief efforts in response to any request from Indonesia.

"On behalf of the Hong Kong community, I told the president that we are deeply grieved by the tragic loss of thousands of lives in Indonesia," Mr Tsang said.

"We have over 100,000 Indonesians living in Hong Kong. They are part of our Hong Kong family. I wish them well and want them to know that we are behind them in such a trying time."

No help sought

So far no Hong Kong residents have been involved in the incident. The Immigration Department has not received any request for assistance.

The department, the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China in the Hong Kong and the Chinese Embassy in Indonesia are maintaining close liaison and monitoring developments.

Hong Kong residents who need assistance may contact the Chinese Embassy in Indonesia at (62-21) 5761027 / 5761040 or call the department's 24-hour hotline at (852) 1868.
