Hong Kong's population at the end of last year was 6,895,500, according to provisional Census & Statistics Department figures.
This was up 50,100 over the previous year, representing a growth rate of 0.7%. The number of births was 47,900 while deaths totalled 36,600, giving a natural increase of 11,300.
Births & inflow
Both births and inflow of One-way Permit holders were important constituents of the overall population increase. The ratio of the number of births to the overall population increase was 96%.
The ratio of the inflow of One-way Permit holders, at 38,100, to the overall population increase was 76%. Deaths offset the increase, with a ratio of 73% of the overall population increase.
Resident population
Not counting the arrival of One-way Permit holders, there was a net inflow of 700 people, bearing a ratio of 1% to the overall increase.
The population is measured on the definition of resident population, which comprises usual residents and mobile residents. Among the total population, 6,687,600 were usual residents and 207,900 were mobile residents.
The number of visitors present in Hong Kong at the end of last year was 359,200.
